Eco-School
We are proud at Tenacres to be an Eco-School with Green Flag Status.
We hope to prepare our children for a lifetime of sustainable living, through teaching, and example in day-to-day practices.
Our Eco Slogan
Helping tomorrow, today.
Our Eco Code
You can use rubbish to make an extra thing,
then you will be a recycling king!
Every day and every night
remember to recycle without a fight.
Everybody knows, that recycling is the way to go.
At Tenacres First School we promote our Eco Code values through our curriculum. We believe, this way, as all children progress through Tenacres they will make those life-long links in the ways that they can help look after their environment and have an impact on the wider world.
The topics in each year group will have distnict links and activities to build and develop knowledge and understanding.
For example in Reception the children begin to learn about their local area by going on walks and exploring their environment. Through topics such as Under the Sea, Woodland Creatures, On the Farm and Little and Large-Minibeasts the children explore the importance of their environment, plants and animals and the reasons why these are so important to us and the ways we can look after these.
Year 1 – through topics such as Into the Woods, Land Ahoy, Epic Explorers and Super Safari enable the children begin to develop their global understanding, comparing and contrasting countries, properties of materials/recycling and looking after the world!
Year 2 – continue to develop their understanding and knowledge through topics such as Epic Environments with a focus on Antartica and the impact that global warming is having. Through Science the importance of food chains and how these are being impacted on is also an aspect of their learning. The locality topic of Redditch Rocks celebrates all that is Redditch and explores areas such as Arrow Valley lake and ways we can look after these special places.
Year 3 – through topics sucgh as There is no place like Home and Rainforests the children continue their learning journey, deepening their understanding especially with the impact that human decisions and behaviour have on vital areas such as the Amazon Rainforest.
Year 4 – the children become ‘Global Guardians’ in their topic, exploring aspects such as pollution, sustainability and deepending their understanding of climate change. Building on from this is the topic Extreme Earth. The children explore natural disasters and the impact human decisions and behaviours are having with catastrophic results.
Forest School – we are so lucky to have two Forest School sites at Tenacres so all the children, in every year group are timetabled for weekly sessions. These sessions enable the children to take their classroom based learning into the outdoors to care for their environemnt and the creatures inhabitating these spaces.
Visits and visitors provide ‘hands on’ experiences for our children through their topics.
All classrooms have a recycling bin with monitors and this is another way in which we promote looking after our environment.
